Beautifully majestic, elephants have a way of etching their presence into your mind beautifully. The calming energy that they exude connects with us deep in our hearts. Almost too unlikely to be true, friendships with these huge, gorgeous creatures is one for life. The endearing loyalty, the quiet confidence of their being, the pure strength that they possess, is truly magical. With their mere existence, they make the world a better place.
Do you know an elephant? Are you one?
This dreamy drape is a handloom cotton saree.
This collection is an exploration of some of our favourite animals and the traits that we humans share with them. The mystical connection that we share with these animals is expressed through Origami inspired shapes that come alive on the soft fabric. The intricate weaving is done by master artisans in West Bengal and a single saree takes approximately 1.5 weeks to be hand-spun and hand-woven. In fact, the entire family of a weaver works to create every product and are involved in various steps of weaving. The magical collection is a result of our designer staying with the artisans for over 3 weeks to understand their world and create this contemporary take on handloom sarees.
Handloom cotton is a type of fabric that is woven using hand operated looms. Two sets of interlacing yarns, the warp (length) and weft (width), are woven on a mechanised loom operated by weavers. These looms do not use electricity. Human handling lends the fabrics a unique feel and renders the fabrics more value. The resultant fabric is softer, more durable and much more comfortable than machine-made fabrics. Handloom cotton is more breathable and thus feels lighter in summers and provides more insulation in winters.
The art of hand weaving is labour intensive and takes a longer time. But, the beauty it adds to the fabric is priceless. Choosing handloom cotton supports the rich weaving heritage of India and lets the weavers carry on the precious art-form to the future generations as well.
