Birthdays are meant to be celebrated but, for as long as I could remember, I detested them. In our household, birthdays doubled up as family reunions where old conflicts reared their ugly heads. And that’s exactly what I’d braced myself for, as my car pulled up on the driveway of my parents’ home. But as I walked through the door, I saw the room festooned with balloons and the smiling faces of my family. Each attendee handed me a present, including my little brother, who had made me a card. I hadn’t expected this and I didn’t know how to react. For once, they’d put aside their differences and come together to celebrate me. I smiled – perhaps some grapefruits can be sweet too.

Handloom cotton is handwoven by our weavers on mechanical looms. The process is time and labour-intensive, using techniques that have been passed down across generations of artisans. The resultant fabric is extraordinarily soft, breathable and resilient, and also drapes very well.
