The first time she saw her rose was in her grandmothers hair. It was a light pink, so delicate and tender that she was almost afraid it would wither away if she gazed at it too long. Her next rose was a bold crimson, plucked from a bush on an impulse and tucked into a letter to a now long-forgotten lover. Her third rose was one tucked into an elaborate arrangement presented to her at a glittering award ceremony “ it was nearly obscured by more ornate orchids and bold dahlias, until she plucked it out and pinned it proudly on her lapel. Next, was a rose the colour of a bleeding heart, which faded in and out of her teary eyes as she laid it down at her mothers feet, bidding her final farewell.

Flowers could mean so much and so little, she thought, caressing the delicate fronds of the blossoming rose bush on her window. But each rose reminded her how every memory was so transient and yet so permanent, and that was something shed never forget.

The handloom cotton is a type of fabric that is woven using hand-operated looms. Two sets of interlacing yarns, the warp (length) and weft (width), are woven on a mechanised loom operated by weavers. These looms do not use electricity. Human handling lends the fabrics a unique feel and renders the fabrics more value. The resultant fabric is softer, more durable and much more comfortable than machine-made fabrics. Handloom cotton is more breathable and thus feels lighter in summers and provides more insulation in winters. The dyeing process also becomes easier for handloom cotton as the colour penetration is substantially more. Hues are absorbed better thus look resplendent on handloom cotton.The art of hand-weaving is labour intensive and takes a longer time. But, the beauty it adds to the fabric is priceless. Choosing handloom cotton supports the rich weaving heritage of India and lets the weavers carry on the precious art-form to the future generations as well.
