Kotpad is a fabric that shares its name with and comes to life in a quaint town in Odisha. The handspun, handwoven, naturally-dyed, fabric is nothing short of magic. Nature’s divinity is truly captured in its yards of beauty as the many elements of creation come together for this fabric. From taking bundles of natural fibres, prepping them for dyeing using castor oil treatments, applying cow-dung, treating with wood-ash washes to dyeing the fibres using the extract of the Aal tree (Indian Mulberry) and other natural concoctions, every step is meticulously followed to get the threads ready to weave. Then, weavers bring the fabric to life by weaving together the threads, interspersed with simple designs that reflect the world as we all see it. The entire process takes 20 – 25 days from start to finish and being chemical-free is kind on the planet as it is on our skin.
