While still a child, Hazrat was sold by her parents and relegated to the life of a courtesan. And yet, she refused to accept the raw deal life had dealt her, choosing instead to define her own destiny – from being named a wife of the King of Awadh to taking charge of the state’s affairs despite her eventual divorce from the king, the queen knew that she was meant for greater things. And, in doing so, Hazrat Mahal became one of the few women to challenge the British rule, even going so far as to lead her soldiers on the battlefield, mounted on an elephant.

A black linen zari saree with pink and silver detailing celebrates the begum’s many facets as well as those who, like her, forge their own destinies.

Linen is considered the strongest of all natural fibres. Linen garments, therefore, are the perfect addition to conscious wardrobes. Made from the stalks of flax plants, linen has a low environmental impact and the production process is significantly less water intensive. As a natural fibre, linen is biodegradable. It is also breathable and very absorbent. These sarees are handwoven with linen and zari, making them a truly luxurious and yet mindful addition to your wardrobe.
